It is very difficult to get rid of the little keepsakes we collect and stuff into corners and boxes and closets. The worst part is when you are also storing your adult children's keepsakes (mostly that they no longer care for anyway). I have pretty much given up worrying about it until I retire. But I also have to tackle my aging parents basement etc. etc.
Well being a minimalist - I have found the solution - video taping while you clear out your old stuff. This is how it works - you need 2 caring people to do this - one to record and ask questions and the other to go thru their own stuff and pick each item up and tell a story about the object. Many revelations and even tears and spontaneous moments ensue and are recorded forever as you pick up an old T-Shirt or a discarded picture or reportcard. Because these are all recorded - the item now has lost it's most critical value which is to trigger these precious memories. Now you can let go of the item knowing that someone else can share in this intimate memory. You ca let go freely because the memory is secure.
